Professional Supervision

It is a process and a relationship that provides space and opportunity for anyone in the helping professions to reflect on their specific work practices. Supervision is not line management but rather an opportunity to reflect on the work one is doing and take time with a trained supervisor to explore and take a contemplative look on what is happening.  Supervision provides support, management, and education in an atmosphere of adult engagement and learning.  It requires time and investment by both the supervisor and the person seeking supervision so that real trust and a sense of collaboration is felt.

Reflective practice, a core component of supervision, invites practitioners to step away from routine thinking, encouraging a deliberate slowdown to discern underlying dynamics often overlooked in the busyness of daily tasks. This process not only facilitates the discovery of practical advice and realistic solutions to work-related queries but also serves as a means of recharging one’s energy and gaining a fresh perspective on professional practice.

We live in a time of high-level stress and for so many of us we are in constant “switched on” mode that disables our ability to remain balanced and centred. Everyone needs time to refocus and become more attuned to the true self, that gets out of focus in the rush of life.

If you find that you are stressed, bored, finding things tough, being in Supervision will provide a welcome oasis to do self- care and reflect safely. We all need to breath with ease, such is the benefit of supervision. A person who is given the opportunity to do self-care, receive feedback, will grow in their ability to respond more effectively in their workplace.

Supervision can be a source of well being that enhances both the individual and the organisation.

Cross-Professional Supervision “involves working across professions, across disciplines and across modalities. Within this approach supervision is accepted as a profession ‘in its own right’ with a unique set of skills, tasks, and competencies”, Dr. Geraldine Holton (Supervisors Association of Ireland- SAI).

The work of cross professional supervision is varied and is inclusive to all professions. I work with other practitioners across the various work practices, and this enhances and enriches mine.

Supervision provides a soulful learning environment for the individual and allows them to reflect, assess, re-orientate their practices. Supervision provides a safe space to explore issues and discover new approaches that can lead to work satisfaction as well as reducing burn out.
